Adult's biological meaning means an animal that is capable of reproduction. Adult is a term employed in relation to human beings to refer to the legal and social aspects. Contrary to the term "minor" or "non-adult" an legal adult is an individual that has reached the age of the age of majority. They are considered competent, responsible and independent. They may also be regarded as a "major". There is a general belief that the threshold at which an individual legally matures is 18. It is possible for this to differ based on the legal rights and the country of origin as well as psychological development.

The stage of development for humans during which physical and mental maturity has been reached. Adulthood, as commonly understood, starts around the age of either 20 or 21. It is around 60 years later than middle years. The three phases of adulthood are early adulthood (from the mid 30s until late 60s), middle adulthood from the mid-30s through late-60s, and finally adulthood (mid-60s up to death). When we reach the early stages of adulthood (between 20-40) the bodies of our children are at their peak of maturity, even though the weight and height of our bodies could increase slightly. As we enter the first years of our lives, we're physically peaking. Muscle strength, response time, sensory ability, and cardiac function are all at their peak.
